With its spectacular mountain backdrop, bustling town centres and waterfront stages, the North Shore has something to offer everyone this summer. Community concerts, outdoor painting programs, yarn bombing, public art walking tours, and so much more. In our Artists Among Us series we meet a City of North Vancouver staffer who loves to sing. And, don't forget North Shore Culture Days happening in September. Artists, culture and heritage groups, libraries and community centres are invited to participate in a special promotional initiative that will include a 4-page spread in the North Shore News. North Shore Culture Days gaining steam!
Interested in a 'behind-the-scenes' peak at your local theatre? A free 'upcycling' workshop? How about participating in the creation of a community mural with a local First Nations artist? These, and many other creative activities will be open to the public during the North Shore Culture Days weekend. Artists, arts and cultural organizations, and creative businesses are invited to participate by hosting a free event anytime from September 28 to 30, 2012.
Artists Among Us - CNV CityShaper + Songstress
A Planning Technician with the City of North Vancouver (CNV), Julia Burns (pictured above kneeling, bottom left) has been singing in bands, choirs, and the shower since college. As part of the CityShaping team working on the City's Official Community Plan, Julia draws from her own choral experience to encourage the public to stand up and make their voices heard. Similar to singing in a choir, Julia believes that the CityShaping project is a wonderful way to bring people together.
SAG's Plein Air Artists in Deep Cove
Plein air, a French term meaning “open air”, is the romantic tradition of painting outdoors using natural light. This summer, the Seymour Art Gallery (SAG) Plein Air Club invites artists of all ages and skill levels to experience the immediacy of nature and a connection to the landscape in the heart of beautiful Deep Cove. At their first meeting in early July, six artists met to spend a sunny afternoon immersed in drawing, watercolour painting, and photography. Grab your brush and paints - the next Plein Air Club gathering happens Sunday July 22nd!
Creating Close Knit Communities!
Have you seen the knitted tree at 333 Lonsdale in front of the North Vancouver Community Arts Council (NVCAC)? Sometimes referred to as 'knit graffiti', this unique form of public art is inspired by the worldwide phenomenon known as ‘yarn bombing’, a type of street art that employs colorful displays of yarn created by crochet and knitting artists of all ages. Here on the North Shore, over 170 participants have picked up their 'Knit Kits' at the NVCAC and immersed themselved in the Tag, You're Knit! community art project. The next knitted installation takes place on Saturday, July 28th in the small park at 1100 Lonsdale Avenue. This one is guaranteed to make you 'bear aware'!
City Hall Public Art Tour
The City of North Vancouver Civic Centre renovation project is now complete, delivering to the community a more sustainable City Hall, improved public access and enhancements to Civic Plaza. Public Art is an important component of the revitalized City Hall with some works integrated directly into the architecture. Spend an afternoon exploring all of the new and existing works of public art located inside and outside the Civic Plaza, Library and City Hall.
