Our North Shore community has an abundance of diverse cultural and creative resources. This fall we've celebrated our first-ever North Shore Culture Days, added new works to our Public Art collection, and revelled in the opening of the beautiful new Gordon Smith Gallery for Canadian Art. Our monthly Artists Among Us column returns and is now open to community members to participate in.

The work on a new Culture Plan for North Vancouver continues with a view to laying out a clear direction and ensuring there is support for arts and culture over the next decade.

Public Art Unveilings Abound!
The District of North Vancouver Mayor and Council have been busy over the past few months cutting ribbons at unveilings for three new public art works. Artist Marianne Nicolson's new work, The Land is a Person, located at the Cedar Springs Retirement Residence, is in the style of a Pacific Northwest Coast Northern hat. Last month during North Shore Culture Days, Mirare by artists Cheryl Hamilton and Michael Vandermeer was unveiled in Princess Park. And Moving Up by Karen Kazmer is the latest public art addition on the Spirit Trail.
North Shore Culture Days - We Did It!
North Shore residents were among the millions of Canadians in 800 communities across the country that fell in love with culture over the Culture Days weekend in September. With over 75 free activities happening right here in North and West Vancouver, our first-ever North Shore Culture Days inspired community members of all ages to get out and explore, experience and engage in the arts.
Gordon Smith Gallery of Canadian Art Opens
The Gordon Smith Gallery of Canadian Art had its official opening October 13, 2012. Located on the former Lonsdale School site at 21st Street and Lonsdale Avenue, this 14,000 square foot, purpose built education centre is the new home of Artists for Kids and the Smith Foundation. The Gallery will be the first in the country dedicated to young audiences, and solely features contemporary Canadian art.
FANS Annual Tribute to the Arts - You're Invited!
Canadian novelist, visual artist and designer Douglas Coupland will accept the 2012 Distinguished Artist Award at this year’s FANS Tribute to the Arts event taking place at the Gordon Smith Gallery of Canadian Art in North Vancouver on Thursday, October 25, 2012. Mr. Coupland joins an illustrious list of past FANS Distinguished Artist Award recipients including Nicola Cavendish, Jay Brazeau and Bryan Adams. Established in 1995, the purpose of FANS (the Fund for the Arts on the North Shore) is to bring awareness to the wealth of artistic talent that exists on the North Shore.
North Van's New Culture Plan - A Work in Progress
The development of a new Cultural Plan for North Vancouver is well underway. Over the past six months, the Arts Office in conjunction with cultural planning consultants has been involved in series of dynamic community consultations, the input from which is being incorporated into a new Cultural Plan that will guide the ongoing development of arts and culture in the City and District of North Vancouver.
Artists Among Us - Artists Painting Art
Alfonso Tejada, an Urban Design Planner with the District of North Vancouver was featured in the Artists Among Us series last year. His recent watercolour of Ken Lum's public art work from shangri-la to shangri-la located at Maplewood Flats is so lovely that it compelled us to give him another spot in this month's eNews.
