('NEW' August 2010): Inter-Action: Canada's New Multiculturalism Grants and Contributions Programs
Program Description: The Inter-Action Events stream provides funding to community based events that create concrete opportunities for interaction among cultural and faith communities. Events should be intended for and open to all Canadians.

Eligible events must:

  • demonstrate involvement of more than one single cultural, religious or ethnic community and establish concrete opportunities for positive interaction among them
  • help foster intercultural or interfaith understanding, civic memory and pride, and/or respect for core democratic values
  • be open to and intended for the general public
  • not have a total cash cost of more than $50,000

Some examples of eligible types of events:

  • community-based celebrations of the historic contributions to Canada of particular ethnic, cultural or religious groups, including in support of initiatives such as Asian Heritage Month and Black History Month
  • a “citizenship day” event for young people, organized by a coalition of faith, ethnic or cultural groups
  • musical events that bridge ethnic, cultural or religious communities
  • a sporting activity involving members of various ethnic, cultural or religious communities
  • interfaith dialogues that bring together representatives of Canada’s faith groups
  • intercultural dialogues to share cultural heritage, traditions and viewpoints
  • public education events that foster intercultural or interfaith understanding, civic memory and pride, and/or respect for core democratic values.

Ineligible Events: Events not eligible for funding are primarily those of a religious, political, commercial or private nature.

Applications are considered year round.

Program description:
This program provides funding to eligible British Columbia book publishers for individual book projects that contribute to the development of provincial or national arts and culture.

Program description:

Program description:

Program description:
Provision of project assistance is based on the following broad principles: (a) the allocation of resources in support of excellence in the arts and (b) the support of activities intended to develop the province's artists and audiences. Projects may include assistance for the festival's artistic program, development of new audiences, professional development of artists and exploration of diverse forms. The applicant must be a professional arts organization. Under normal circumstances, applicants must have previously mounted the festival prior to requesting assistance.

 

Program eligibility:
Eligible applicants must have been a registered non-profit society in the Province of British Columbia for a minimum of one year. Professional arts festivals are directed by experienced, recognized artists and/or arts managers, with proven track records in programming and administration. The program will include work by professional artists, linked by a clearly articulated, unifying theme or vision. Festivals also endeavour to build a range of alliances with different communities. Program: Project Assistance Museums and Visual Arts Organizations


Program description:
Provision of project assistance is based on the following broad principles: (a) the allocation of resources in support of excellence in arts and cultural activities, (b) the support of activities intended to develop the province's artists and audiences, and (c) the preservation and development of the cultural heritage of the province.

 

Program eligibility:
Eligible projects may include assistance for development of unique exhibitions; development of new audiences; training of visual artists or curatorial staff; critical documentation; exploration of new forms of expression within the discipline; or organizational development. Eligible applicants must have been a registered non-profit society (in good standing) in the Province of British Columbia or a public institution operated by a municipality with a community-based advisory board, for a minimum of one year. For Museums or Visual Arts organizations operated by a municipality, a community-based advisory board is one that has a policy-setting responsibility for the museum's public programs and services to its defined constituencies. Program: Project Assistance For Professional Theatre

 

Program description:
Assistance is available through Level I for eligible independent artists, artists’ co-operatives or BC registered non-profit theatre companies to support projects primarily involving creation, development and/or production. Individual applicants must have been residents of British Columbia for the 12-month period immediately prior to application for assistance. Under normal circumstances, awards will not exceed 50% of total project costs. Level II will assist registered non-profit theatre organizations with a substantial history of creating, producing and/or disseminating theatre in British Columbia. An eligible company will have established a unique mandate in the province’s theatre community and can demonstrate the ability to undertake projects on the proposed scale, with a diverse revenue base.

 

Program eligibility:
Eligible applicants will be: a resident BC independent theatre artist, with a minimum of three years of experience working professionally; or an artists’ co-operative comprised of resident BC theatre artists, who individually can demonstrate a minimum of three years of experience working professionally; a registered BC non-profit theatre organization, which has been in operation for a minimum of one year. Program: Project Assistance Community Arts Festivals

 

Program description:
Awards are available on a project basis to assist community-based arts and cultural organizations to produce an arts festival in their community. An arts festival specifically celebrates the arts and artists; it develops knowledge and awareness of the arts. Events whose primary purpose is the celebration of historic, community, civic or ethnocultural identities are not eligible for this program. British Columbia Arts Council assistance is directed towards the costs of professional artists engaged for the festival.

Eligible applicants must have been a registered non-profit society in the Province of British Columbia for a minimum of one year and must be a community arts organization that has previously produced at least one arts festival. Further eligibility requirements may apply.

Program description:
Awards are available on a project basis to assist with development and special activities of community-based arts organizations in British Columbia. Projects should endeavour to improve the artistic standards of community-based artistic creation and/or increase community participation in arts activities.

 

Program eligibility:
Eligible projects should enhance an organization's ability to provide opportunities for participation, develop the leadership required for community arts activity, cultivate local support for and/or assist delivery of artistic excellence. Projects should elevate the standards of community arts practice or facilitate artistic activities which express local ideas, narratives or issues which engage community participation. Eligible applicants must be a community arts organization (development of the arts must be the principal objective described in its incorporation documents), and have been a registered non-profit society in British Columbia for a minimum of one year. Program: Project Assistance Arts Periodicals

 

Program description:
Project Assistance is available to support periodicals devoted primarily (at least 75%) to the first publication of any form of artistic expression and social, cultural or intellectual commentary or inquiry. There are two categories of professional project assistance: Development Projects, Special Project Assistance

 

Program eligibility:
Eligible applicants must have been registered as a non-profit society in the Province of British Columbia and have completed at least one full year of operation, be able to present a financial statement for that year, and have financial guarantees and firm program proposals for a second consecutive year of operation. An eligible periodical must: be printed on paper; average at least 24 pages per issue over a one-year period; publish at least three issues per year; have a paid circulation of at least 500 copies per issue; have at least 50% of its circulation paid (as opposed to free distribution); demonstrate a commitment to paying contribution writers for their work. Program description:
This program supports time-limited projects initiated by Canadian non-profit, artist-run organizations, groups or collectives. The projects must be intended to provide enhanced opportunities for the production of independent media artworks by Canadian artists. Projects must also address specific production needs in the communities that applicants serve or intend to serve.

Program: Professional Dance

 

Program description:
Assistance is provided on an annual basis to assist selected professional dance companies, collectives and independent artists, in the creation, production and animation of dance in British Columbia. The program is intended to assist a range of professional artists, from emerging through to established practitioners, working across a wide spectrum of dance forms. Independent artists must have been residents of British Columbia for the 12-month period immediately prior to application for assistance.

 

Program eligibility:
Resident BC independent dance artists with a minimum of three years of experience working professionally; or, resident BC choreographers with a minimum of two professionally produced works who are recognized for their contribution to the development of the art form; or, registered non-profit dance organizations which have been in operation for a minimum of one year, have professionally produced two works and are able to provide a recent independently prepared financial statement. Program: Special Project Assistance - Unique Opportunities


Program description:
Special Project Assistance – Unique Opportunities supports extraordinary production costs incurred by professional BC arts organizations for projects scheduled as part of significant national or international cultural events. Over the next five years, a number of events will provide opportunities to demonstrate to national and global audiences the outstanding calibre of the arts in BC. The program will assist arts organizations that plan to take full advantage of involvement in these opportunities.

 

Program eligibility:
Under normal circumstances, an eligible applicant must: be a professional arts organization assisted by the BC Arts Council in recent years (2007 -2009) and in good standing as a registered not-for-profit society in the Province of British Columbia; have operated as a not-for-profit for a minimum of two years; provide audited or independently-prepared “review engagement” financial statements for the most recently completed fiscal year; employ competent artistic and management leadership as demonstrated in previous achievements, collaborations, partnerships, relationships, etc.; compensate artists by paying fees at industry standards and by adhering to international copyright law; be in receipt of a formal invitation to participate in a unique event; provide a project budget that demonstrates a diversified revenue base, with significant funding from sources other than the BC Arts Council, such as guarantees, federal and local government support, and private funding; have completed and submitted final reports for any outstanding project assistance provided by the BC Arts Council; and demonstrate the need for financial assistance, as defined by Council policy.

Program: Project Assistance Arts-Based Community Development


Program description:
Awards are available to assist with projects that develop and extend the practice and understanding of arts-based community development through the processes of creating art; producing events; and developing resource materials for arts-based community development practitioners.

 

Program eligibility:
In arts-based community development work, professional artists assist communities - through arts-centred activity - to gain awareness of their own power as culture makers and contribute to that community’s advancement of creative productivity, celebration, human dignity and health and well-being. These include activities that: transfer knowledge; celebrate uniqueness; improve infrastructure; nurture and heal and inspire and motivate a specified community. Support may be provided for projects that: create new work; advance the practice of arts-based community development; and enhance the capacity of artists to provide leadership in this field. In acknowledgement that community processes can be lengthy, long-term or phased projects will be considered if indicated on the first application form requesting support. Applications are required annually for phased projects, and support is not guaranteed in subsequent years.

Program: Project Assistance for Professional Music


Program description:
Professional Project Assistance supports initiatives in the creation, development, production and live performance of classical, experimental, original and traditional art forms from all world cultures. Grants are intended to contribute to the successful realization of a single event or activity. The maximum contribution to a project in this program is 50% of the total budget of the project. Receipt of funding does not guarantee assistance in subsequent years.

 

Program eligibility:
Under normal circumstances, an eligible applicant must:

* Be readily identified as a professional BC independent artist, collective or ensemble;
* or Be registered and in good standing as a non-profit society and professional performing arts organization in the Province of British Columbia;

Program description:
Licensed gaming provides opportunities for eligible charitable or religious organizations to raise funds by conducting their own gaming events. There are also two grant programs available to eligible community organizations: the Direct Access Program and Bingo Hall Affiliation

 

Program eligibility:
Your organization may be eligible to hold a licensed gaming event and/or receive government gaming grants if it: is operated on a not-for-profit basis; provides services that are of significant benefit to your local community; can demonstrate that it has provided services for a minimum of 12 months prior to applying for a licence or a grant, and; is structured so that your volunteers have management and control of the organization's activities. Program: Theatre Production Project Grants: Extended Project Support (Pilot Component)


Program description:
Extended Project Support, a new pilot component of the Theatre Production Project Grants program, has the primary objective of supporting professional Canadian theatre companies and collectives that wish to embark on a project over an extended period of time (maximum three years). This project may include both development and production of one or more pieces of theatre, as well as tour coordination costs. However, actual touring costs (fees, transportation, per diems, etc.) cannot be included.

 

Program eligibility:
The core members of your company or collective must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada. Theatre companies or collectives must have received at least two Theatre Production Project Grants from the Theatre Section of the Canada Council within the last five years.

Program description:
This program assists non-profit Canadian arts organizations and collectives to undertake innovative, time-limited projects. The projects must disseminate Canadian independent media artworks to the public, with a view to developing increasingly knowledgeable and committed audiences and/or expanding Canadian and international markets for this work.

 

Program eligibility:
Incorporated, non-profit Canadian arts organizations are eligible. Artists’ collectives or curatorial collectives with a minimum of three members are also eligible. Collectives need not be incorporated or have a permanent site. Each member must, however, be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada and be a practising media artist and/or media arts curator. Further eligibility requirements may apply.

Program: Spoken Word and Storytelling Program (Festival and Performance Series)

 

Program description:
The Festivals and Performance Series component increases knowledge and appreciation of Canadian spoken word and storytelling activities by providing opportunities for spoken word artists and storytellers to perform their works.

 

Program eligibility:
Applicants, as well as the majority of participants in the grant-supported activities, must be Canadian citizens or have permanent resident status, as defined by Citizenship and Immigration Canada. Applicants can include: professional spoken word artists or professional storytellers who have been paid in the past for their public literary performances or are recognized, in writing, by two established spoken word artists or storytellers; professional writers who wish to transform their work to the spoken word or storytelling genre; and, collectives, producers, publishers, or spoken word and storytelling hosts that have proven experience in producing spoken word or storytelling art. Applicants to this component can apply for only one project per competition. Also, applicants cannot apply to another Canada Council program for support of the same project.

This program is not open to individual artists. Program description:
The Canada Council for the Arts, in partnership with the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, provides assistance to foreign publishers for the translation of literary works by Canadian authors, into languages other than French or English, for publication abroad.

Program description:
The Visual Arts Section's Acquisition Assistance program provides financial support to Canadian art museums and public art galleries. Grants from this program are available on a matching funds basis to purchase original works of contemporary Canadian visual art, including architecture (maquettes and drawings), fine craft and photography.

Program: Literary Readings and Author Residencies Program


Program description:
The Literary Readings and Author Residencies Program increases knowledge and appreciation of Canadian authors and writing by providing opportunities for authors to read from their works, be in contact with an audience or public, and contribute to the quality of life of a community by their presence. The program has two components: Literary Readings, and Author Residencies. (There are separate application guidelines and form for Author Residencies.) Literary Readings provides financial assistance to organizations that wish to invite authors to give public readings. The purpose is to promote the literary works of writers and to give audiences across Canada greater access to authors. Author Residencies provides financial assistance to organizations that wish to retain the services of a writer-in-residence and are able to match the contribution made by the Canada Council. The purpose is to encourage exchange between the author and the community, and to enable the author to work on a writing project.

 

Program eligibility:
For Literary Readings: Canadian organizations such as post-secondary institutions, public libraries, writers’ associations, national service organizations, museums, art galleries and community centres that intend to host four or more full readings (or the equivalent) may apply for assistance to invite writers to their region. For Author Residencies: Applicants must demonstrate that they have the organizational and financial capacities to host a professionally published Canadian writer in an effective and professional manner. Hosts are encouraged to develop public lecture series or innovative ways of fostering public appreciation for Canadian writing as part of the activities planned for the writer-in-residence. Innovative residencies that involve communities not typically exposed to Canadian literature are particularly encouraged. Program: Grants for Literary Arts Promotion: Project Grants and Artists and Community Collaboration Program (ACCP) Grants


Program description:
The Grants for Literary Arts Promotion program provides support to Canadian, non-profit organizations that increase public awareness of and access to Canadian literature. Specifically, the program provides financial support to professional organizations that: promote Canadian literary artists (writers, translators, storytellers and spoken word artists); encourage the development of literature through promotional, networking, professional development and research activities; and, support audience development activities for literature.

 

Program eligibility:
The program is open to Canadian, incorporated non-profit organizations and collectives, with a primary mandate in literary arts promotion. Note that the Grants for Literary Arts Promotion program also offers operating grants to literary arts promotion organizations and national arts service organizations. There are separate eligibility criteria, application guidelines and forms for operating grants, and the deadline is 15 September. These are the guidelines for the Project Grants and Artists and Community Collaboration Program (ACCP) Grants component of the program. Eligible activities include: festivals, literary events, large reading series, performance series, salons du livre, and collective approaches to promotion, including the development of promotional materials. Program: Book Publishing Support: Translation Grants

 

Program description:
Within its mandate to promote and disseminate the arts in Canada, the Canada Council for the Arts provides financial assistance for the first translation of literary works written by Canadians. Translation must be into French, English or an Aboriginal language with a view to the publication of the works in Canada. (Only the first edition of a translated work is eligible.)

 

Program eligibility:
The request for funds must be submitted by the publisher who will publish the translation. Translators cannot solicit a grant directly from the Canada Council. Publishers seeking assistance must currently be participating in the Canada Council's Book Publishing Support: Emerging Publisher Grants and Block Grants program. Program description:
This program provides grants to Canadian organizations for the public presentation of works in architecture, landscape architecture and urbanism. The grants support special projects that promote contemporary, Canadian works of architecture to a broad and diverse public. Program eligibility:
You must meet the Canada Council for the Arts’ definition of a professional artist. Professional artists are those who have specialized training in an art practice (not necessarily in academic institutions), are recognized as such by their peers (artists working in the same artistic tradition), and are committed to devoting more time to the artistic activity if financially possible. Professional artists in integrated arts must have maintained an integrated arts practice for at least one year before the competition deadline, and have at least one year of public presentation or publication in integrated arts. If you are a graduate student, you are eligible only if you meet the Canada Council’s definition of a professional artist and your proposed program of work is not related to your program of study. (You must include in your application a letter from the graduate student program director to verify this information.) You are not eligible if you are a full-time undergraduate student at a school, college or university.This program is accessible to Aboriginal artists and artists of diverse regional and cultural communities of Canada. Program description:
Dance Presenter Support: Foreign Artists Tours contributes to the costs of international dance artists, companies or collectives touring in Canada at the invitation of a Canadian dance presenter or producer. International artists must have a Canadian presenter or producer apply on their behalf and performances must take place in at least three consecutive cities. The primary objectives of the program are as follows: to enhance programming options for presenters, to increase audience knowledge and appreciation of dance, and to encourage dialogue between members of the Canadian and international dance milieu.

 

Program eligibility:
Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria: be directed by recognized professionals and/or community leaders engage professional artists; operate on a seasonal basis, or be attempting to operate on a continuous basis; have a history of public presentation or producing dance. If the organization has less than a three-year history, the track record of the individual presenter or producer will be taken into consideration: have an administrative infrastructure to support the project; not be carrying an accumulated deficit that threatens the viability of their organization; receive support from other sources, such as other levels of government and/or private sources; apply on behalf and be part of the tour that travels to a minimum of three consecutive cities; one of which must be confirmed.

The Career Development Program assists Canadian professional musicians in the development of their live performance and touring careers. Program description:
This component provides support to small Canadian professional ensembles/bands/groups that wish to self-produce or co-produce one or more concerts in their local area, or that wish to rehearse for a special event or to incorporate new Canadian compositions into their performing repertoire. This program's particular emphasis is on encouraging the performance of music played or composed by Canadian professional artists and creating opportunities for the presentation of Canadian music.

 

Program eligibility:
Professional music ensembles/bands/groups of two to 22 musicians are eligible if they meet one of the following criteria: they have been working together long enough to create a unique and cohesive musical voice, usually a minimum of one year, and their structure involves a variable-numbered pool of musicians working together on a regular basis, as stated in their artistic mandate. All members of a group must be Canadian citizens or have permanent-resident status, as defined by Citizenship and Immigration Canada. This program component does not require that groups be incorporated, non-profit organizations.
