The term 'public art' refers to works of art that have been created with the specific intention of being sited or staged in a public space that is accessible to all.

Public art has the ability to define a community by sharing noteworthy stories, animating local traditions, transforming the landscape and expressing community values and aspirations.

Public art can be integrated into an environment taking on a functional form such as seating, tree grates, lighting and architectural elements. Or, it can manifest as a discrete element such as a sculpture, mural, mobile, projection etc.

WHY PUBLIC ART?
North Vancouver believes that public amenities such as parks, pathways, benches and street landscaping enhance the quality of the built environment. Adding public art to these amenities not only invests a space with 'place-making' qualities and culture, but also has the capacity to interpret the historical, social, environmental, and cultural nuances that are unique to this area.

THE BENEFITS OF PUBLIC ART
Public art plays an important role in creating an authentic sense of place and in community revitalization. A distinctive asset that adds to a neighbourhood’s general attractiveness, public art can be a powerful tool to attract new residents, businesses and visitors. In addition, public artworks can become defining icons for a city. Examples of defining works include; the Eiffel Tower in Paris, New York's Statue of Liberty, and Cloud Gate in downtown Chicago.
