The Fund for the Arts on the North Shore Society (FANS) acknowledges the wealth of artistic talent living on Vancouver’s North Shore by honouring local artists who have achieved national and international recognition in their field. Mr. Coupland joins an illustrious list of past FANS Distinguished Artist Award recipients including Nicola Cavendish, Jay Brazeau and Bryan Adams.
Raised in West Vancouver, Douglas Coupland received his early formal training at the Emily Carr College of Art and Design and the Hokkaido College of Art and Design. Best known as a literary powerhouse, Mr. Coupland has also created a substantial body of visual art works, having undertaken numerous design commissions and public art projects. Much of his visual art is “fuelled by the same buoyant populism (nicely salted with a deep suspicion of pop culture) found in his books.”(R.M. Vaughan, Globe & Mail)
Local artists also featured at this year’s FANS Tribute to the Arts are musician Adam Woodall and visual artist Anne Gudrun, recipients of the Don S.Williams Grant. These two emerging artists will receive cash awards to assist them with their blossoming careers.
Surrounded by a diverse collection of contemporary Canadian art, including Coupland’s Green Soldier No.1, attendees to this year’s Tribute event will have the opportunity to meet the artists, enjoy sumptuous hors d’oeuvres, and listen to performances by rising star Asha Diaz and FANS award winner Adam Woodall. In addition, a wonderful array of creative and consumable Silent Auction items will be on view and open to bids, with all proceeds going to benefit the FANS artist recognition and professional development programs.
